4 out of 5 stars great printer, with caveats   January 5, 2009
We bought this printer about a month ago to replace an HP LaserJet 4L that died after 16 years' service. We like it a lot. I like that it can be set up wirelessly, so reducing our tangle of cables and easily prints from any PC in our home network. My wife likes that it looks nice and feels solid. We both think it prints well, it is fast, and we got a great price, around $85, from Amazon.

A few nits:

1. Wireless setup is not easy. I followed the instructions on Brother's website FAQ (from Brother support, USA, pick model HL-2170W, then "FAQs and Troubleshooting" then "Wireless Setup Instructions" then "Windows - wireless setup without a network cable." The instructions worked perfectly, though they are about 40 pages and several dozen steps. So this printer is not "plug and play" in the sense that it takes some patience to set up. And I would not expect our parents in their 70s or 80s to be able to set it up -- to do so you have to be comfortable with very basic wireless networking, ie, what's your SSID and do you have WPA or WEP and what does hexadecimal mean.

2. The printer is a power hog and spikes our power lines, especially when it comes out of sleep and starts printing. I can't believe it got an Energy Star rating. We had to upgrade our UPS to support this printer, since our 5 year old UPS with a low-ish battery sensed a power surge and wanted to turn off the PC every time the printer kicked into action.

3. Its networking seems to behave badly, apparently grabbing the IP address of other things on our network and generally messing stuff up. In particular, this printer causes occasional problems for our bridge-connected Sonos sound system. The solution to those network problems seems to involve turning the printer off, restarting network stuff, then turning the printer back on (limiting the IP addresses available to the printer may be another option).

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER   January 3, 2009

As is the case with every other person here, it is virtually impossible to get this printer to work...period...if you want to set it up to work as a wireless printer, good luck...no can do. I've now spent over 3 hours on this with no luck.

The instruction guide is useless.

I will consult with a network specialist friend of mine regarding this but never have I had such problems with a printer. If he can't get it to work within a reasonable period of time, I'll gladly send it back and get something functional.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY...BUY SOMETHING ELSE...DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR!!

I wouldn't ordinarily trash a product, but this is the worst I've ever seen. Don't make the mistake I made...buy an HP, Epson, etc...Brother should be ashamed for even making this thing...virtually NOBODY can get it to work...for those who said they hooked it up successfully through a home network for wireless function, please print detailed instructions!

Thanks and Happy New Year...don't buy this printer!

5 out of 5 stars Mac USB & Wireless setup a breeze   January 1, 2009
Mac setup was unbelievably easy. Connected via USB to wired 10.4 machine in about 3 minutes. Connected via wireless to 10.5 machine in less than 10 minutes. Easiest printer setup ever. Print quality is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and easy to set up, but follow the instructions closely!   January 1, 2009
I just set this up on a Linksys router with 2 Vista laptops and 1 old XP desktop, all running wireless. I was nervous given others' comments about network installation problems. However, it was very fast and easy, but you need to follow the instructions closely and do them in order. I used the recommended installation options of temporarily connecting an Ethernet network cable between the printer and the router, and of using the "Infrastructure option". I have security on my network, but I only had to know the network password to set it up - the IP addresses and everything else set up automatically. It only took about 15 minutes to set up the printer, and then all 3 computers. You put the CD into one of the computers, which sets up the network/printer and the print driver for that computer. Then you put the CD into each of the other computers and only install the print driver. The CD is pretty self-explanatory, but I think it's a good idea to read the instruction book and also follow that as you go along. The two work together well.

Printing is very fast and I haven't had problems with the printer "waking up" when it powers down. The print quality looks excellent. The paper tray is nice and large. The toner cartridge that comes with it only prints 1000 pages, so keep that in mind. It looks like the drum will need to be replaced eventually, which is expensive, so factor that into your analysis. But if you calculate the total printing costs including the printer, replacement toner cartridges, and a replacement drum eventually, the total printing cost still comes out between 2 and 3 cents a page for 20,000 pages, which is a great deal compared to inkjet printers. And a laser looks a lot better for black & white printing. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Wireless Laser Printer   December 31, 2008
This Brother laser printer was review by Consumer Reports and was not the highest rated personal laser printer. However, it was not rated significantly lower than several higher priced printers either. Factor in the wireless capability and 10 second warm-up time and this printer becomes very competitive, in my opinion. Consumer Reports has the cost per page printed as around 1 cent. If this proves true, then this printer will be very inexpensive to operate. The setup is simple. You will need an ethernet cable to attach the printer to your wireless router for the installation, assuming that you are planning on using it wirelessly (and why not?). I just followed the directions and it was up and running very quickly. The beauty of this wireless functionality is that once the installation is completed, then you can put this compact printer anywhere that it is needed. One warning, though, is that I made the mistake of plugging the printer into my computer's UPS. In my case, the printer came on and pulled so much power that the UPS registered a surge and cut power to the system. The take home message is that the printer may need a dedicated outlet. This is no big deal, since it is wireless and does not need to be near the computer.

I did the calculations on the cost of operation of this laser printer versus my inkjet and the reduced cost of operation will pay off the printer in 6 months! My wireless all-in-one ink jet printer is fine, but will now only be used for copies, faxes, color printing, etc. The black and white documents will all go to the laser printer.
