Brilliant mix, brilliant videos! December 1, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I wasn't a big fan of this Cornelius album when it came out on CD, I thought it was missing the songwriting skills of the earlier albums. Then I went and saw his show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and saw the videos on this disc for the first time. "Fit Song" and "Gum" blew me away. And now with this DVD with the 5.1 mix, I think this group of audio experiments is genius.
For those who want to show off the sound of your 5.1 system, I highly recommend this DVD. Great attention has been put into the sound mix. "Like a Rolling Stone" has a sort of "spoon in jar" sound that travels around the speakers. "Fit Song" and "Beep It" place the instruments in four corners of your viewing/listening room. And the "warm" songs just fill up the room with sound.
Then the videos. "Fit Song" is still amazing every time I watch it and "Rolling Stone" is so densely packed with objects and optical illusions, you will find yourself debating with friends exactly how they did it.
The bonus CD of mixes is fine, but I like the menu screen for the DVD. With the TV off, you can let it loop over and over and voila--you have wind chimes in the room, something that has mystified visitors. I've had friends searching my place for the chimes, never realizing that they're coming from the speakers.
This is a seriously cool package, and makes you wish more albums were mixed for 5.1.
