Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Review
Finding a wall stud behind sheet rock or paneling used to be a hit and miss routine, but the new Zircon stud finders have taken the "miss" out of the equation. The i500 scanner is a five-function scanner that can locate the exact center of a wall stud behind paneling or sheetrock up to 3/4 inches deep or up to 1-1/2 inches deep when set to DeepScan Mode. The scanner can locate copper and other non-ferrous metal up to 1-1/2 inches deep or it can locate ferrous metal such as rebar up to 3 inches deep in concrete. This is a handy feature when repairing cracked or damaged foundation walls.

After you have located the wood or metal studs you can set the i500 to AC Tracing or AC WireWarning to locate hot electrical wiring that you want to avoid when nailing or cutting into the wall or ceiling cavity. Even AC wiring incased in plastic conduit cannot hide from the i500. The i500 also includes a large easy-to-read back-lit LCD screen and easy-to-understand, on-screen graphics and an audio signal to indicate the target area. A patented SpotLite Pointing System also shines a bright beam of light over the target's center that is easy to see even when working in low light conditions. Use the i500 to hang cabinets, pictures, mirrors, and shelves or to install ceiling fans, grab bars, and chandeliers. You can also use the i500 to locate metal pipes behind tile or in concrete or to find conduit, rebar, electrical boxes, exhaust vents, and ducting. An important safety feature is the ability of the i500 to locate and trace hot wires behind walls, floors, and ceilings. --D. Barnett

5 out of 5 stars Wood, metal, wires... it finds them all!   September 22, 2008
This stud-finder came highly recommended from a friend that's a contractor, and I've had nothing but good experiences with it. If it says there's a stud in the wall, I can be sure it's there. I've never had a problem with glitches or any of the other quirks the other reviewers point out. It's easy to use, accurate, and makes home improvement just that much easier.

1 out of 5 stars Does not work   July 6, 2008
The i500 claims to be able to find wiring, plumbing and of course studs. After 2 housrs of trying I gave up trying to find studs through 5/8" drywall. Avoid this product.

5 out of 5 stars A must-buy for the do-it-yourselfer   February 12, 2008
This is a must-buy for those who like to hang things on their walls. The ability to mark both the middle and the edge of the stud is priceless. The ability to deep scan and detect electrical lines is also very useful. This is an amazing improvement over my old, simple Zircon stud finder of a few years ago. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste money   October 6, 2007
I brought one at Target clearance for $12. It meant to replace our wood stud scanner, which is in his last leg. Turns out our last leg stud scanner is still out better the this Zircon one. This Multiscanner only displays "restart in another location" and nothing else. Too late to return, what a waste!

1 out of 5 stars Does not work.   June 27, 2007

I read the reviews and purchased this anyway from Lowes; my big mistake. I spent over an hour carefully marking for a 7 foot shelf standard bracket. I re-checked the findings several times and had consistent readings using the scanner left-right and right-left. I even used the metlal mode because the house has some aluminum studs and got the same readings. I drilled five holes and missed the stud every time. As I prepared to insert toggle bolts I peered into the hole and saw the stud. The scanner missed the center of the stud by 7/8 inch and was therefore totally useless.
