Best Performance/Gaming notebook! October 20, 2008 I bought this last week and I must say this is the best laptop I've owned. Built quality is one of the best I've seen and it has so many features for the money. It comes with 2 hard drive each partitioned into two so when you go to My Computer, you will see 4 equally sized hard drives. I changed it into RAID 0 with 2 partitions. BTW, it comes with a notebook backpack and a gaming mouse!
Things I like: - Plenty of USB ports (4) - Memory card reader - Second OLED display above keyboard - 2.0 Megapixel video camera - Glowing logo on the lid and on the sides of the lid - Nvidia 9700M GT graphics card - Nice and bright screen with great resolution
Things I don't like: - Speakers sounds pretty weak. Even my Asus EEE laptop's speakers sound louder than this laptop. This is the only thing I don't like about this notebook.
Right product- Its just great! September 15, 2008 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
This is a great Vista gaming laptop. It is a gaming laptop and probably a bit of overkill for regular people. Ill be reviewing this as a gaming laptop and not as a word processor/email machine.
Pros- I am playing Warhammer Online Beta and with all of the settings turned up to max I get around 55-70fps. I hear they will be allowing even higher settings soon so this may not be possible at release, for now it is beautiful. Example; the armor has a gleam to it and looks so much better than WoW, and you can see character shaped shadows on the ground that move with the sun. Stunning really.
The OLED display is nice to view email as you are playing in full screen mode. There is a decent vent on the left side that 2nds as a coffee warmer/ popcorn popper during game play. Right above it is a 15 pin VGA connector (who uses this any more??). There is a panel lust right of the OLED that allows for quick start-up of programs and even an instant boot option if you just want to surf the web, play mp3's and so on (looks linux based). Battery life outside of game is pretty good. Significantly better than my Mac Book pro. I get nearly 3 hours just futzing around the net and reading emails. During full bore game play expect 30-45 mins max. But you shouldn't be gankfesting on a battery anyway. Plug it in.
Some specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHzT9400 45nm 6MB L2 Cache 35W 1066 MHz FSB - allows turbo mode up to 2.8GHz (through Asus software adjustment in Vista) WSXGA HD monitor (looks beautiful honest) 1680x1050 native 2 250GB HD in Raid 0 configuration 4GB RAM nVidia GeForce 9700M GT 512MB GDDR3 Full Numpad WASD keys with arrows on them (see gaming) Vista 64 Home Premium(not too much junkware installed) 4 USB 2.0 1 ESATA 1 Fire Wire Multi-DVD burner drive
Cons- Keyboard is a bit cheap feeling (sorry, mac user here) Sound is a bit weak through built in speakers. The sub woofer looking thing on the bottom is an air intake for the massive 3D card, not a speaker (oh well).
Before you buy: This is the A1 model. There is an A2 model and the differences are these: Blueray drive 7200 RPM 400GB HD Raid 0
That's about it. So for a hundred or so more dollars you can upgrade to the A2. I don't care about blue ray on my laptop and If I want to upgrade the HD later I will probably plop in some 10k drives when they become available. For now this loads just fine.
Final thoughts: This is a great windows based gaming laptop that will hold its own against many big-box computer manufacturers from Texas that make gaming laptops and bought out custom laptop making company that makes rigs from aliens ( run on intentional, you get the drift I hope).
I did not want to renew my 3D Mark Vantage but I did run the free 1x test and it performed very well. You can upgrade the processor and video card in this laptop later (so I have heard on the forums I have seen) which makes this a pretty good upgradeable machine for the future.
All in all a great gaming machine for a very good price.
wrong product listed/shipped September 3, 2008 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
I ordered this product which is listed as the G50V-A2 laptop which is according to Asus has a 400GIG hard drive and a blu ray drive. However, upon recieving this laptop I discovered it was the G50V-A1 model which according to Amazon's page lists A1 as the model number not the A2. While this is a good laptop it is not what I ordered, Amazon made a mistake. Upon trying to call customer service, they said I could return it but they did not stock the A2 so they were unable to send me what I ordered. I am still working with them to get some kind of financial refund so I can attempt to find the blu ray drive that I ordered, and install it myself. So the product is good, but buyer beware it is not the A2 model with the blu-ray drive it is the A1 model, which is one step down. Amazon says they are looking into the typographical error made in the headline stating this is an A2 laptop but have yet to change it, so buyer beware this is the A1 model not the A2
