Amazon.com Product Description
You don't have to take out a second mortgage to enjoy the brilliant colors and vibrant realism of high-definition television, thanks to this 30-inch Samsung TXS3082WH CRT HDTV. At just 16.3 inches deep, it's 30 percent slimmer than a conventional CRT TV. It's also a great choice for smaller home theater cabinets, thanks to the bottom mounted speakers which shave 5 inches off the total width. The silver and black bezel provides an elegant and modern look.

Samsung's DynaFlat screen increases the viewing angle while minimizing distortion and glare, and the finer pixel dot pitch flat CRT improves picture resolution and brightness. You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the single HDMI or dual component connections. An analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

The TXR3080WH is packed to the gills with advanced video and audio features. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. The 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing feature detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theater-like experience at home. The velocity scan modulation function improves black to white image transitions for sharper detail and enhanced picture definition in high brightness operating conditions.

It also includes an Invar shadow mask for rendering detailed, high-contrast images free of geometric distortion. A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing a brighter, clearer picture.

Choose the mode (standard, dynamic, movie, or custom with adjustable brightness, contrast, sharpness, and color selections) that best suits the program you're watching. You can also select from five screen filling modes--normal, wide, zoom 1, zoom 2, or panorama (which stretches less in the middle and more towards the edge). It has a number of convenience features, including Remote Surf timer (returns TV to original channel so other channels can be browsed during commercial breaks), sleep timer, V-Chip parental controls, auto channel programming, channel labeling, and tri-lingual on-screen displays (English, French, and Spanish).

It features two built-in, 10-watt speakers (for 20 watts of total output) and right/left stereo output for connection to a home theater audio system. The Auto Volume Leveler feature keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing to minimize static sound bursts, and it offers four preset sound modes (standard, movie, music, and speech). High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. Enjoy progressive scan DVD playback or game play using the component video inputs. The full line-up of video and audio connections includes:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 2 (1 side) in, 1 out
  • S-Video: 1 (side) in
  • Component Video: 2 in
  • HDMI: 2 in
  • RF: 2 in

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines.

TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into OfocusO during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

1 out of 5 stars A huge pain! Run far away from this TV...   October 23, 2007
Approximately 1 year after purchasing my Samsung set, it began to randomly turn itself off, then back on again. The problem progressively got worse, until one day it went completely out. I took it to my local Samsung repair shop. After 2 attempts they were able to temporarily fix it. The set worked for about 1 month, then started the old problem again. I can usually watch about 1 hour worth of TV before it starts turning its on and off. It will eventually develop an 8 sec off/on pattern which makes watching anything on it impossible. Of course my warranty had expired when the trouble started. So now I will have to haul this very heavy set back to the repair shop, where they will likely put a band-aid on the problem, because I don't think anyone really knows how to fix it.

1 out of 5 stars Sam junk   September 11, 2007

I purchased a 3079 TV in September 2005 because I liked the design and picture quality. Except for weighing a ton, I was satisfied until approximately six months ago.

In April 2007, I turned the set on and something happened inside and the power was gone. I knew it was just out of warranty, so I took it to a local TV repair shop. He fixed it. Approximately one month later, the same problem occured. I took it back to the same shop and he fixed it again, stating the problem with the TV was in the degass circuitry. Well, I "broke my back" and brought it home for the second time. I turned it on approximately 7-10 times before it gave up again. This "dead lemon" is sitting in my bedroom but it belongs in the landfill. If I didn't have over $900.00 tied up in the set, it would already have been there.

I have a complaint registered with Samsung. I will wait to see if anything happens with them before trashing the set.

What is ironnic is that just before this set started giving problems, I purchased a 50" Samsung plasma and moved this set to the bedroom.

Believe me, I wouldn't trust any of the Samsung SlimFit models.

If Samsung doesn't do anything about this inferior TV, my future with Samsung products will be over.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This TV   April 25, 2007
I bought the TXS3082WH model, I guess a previous model of this one, in May 2006. A friend had just bought one and it looked great, so I went out and got one too. Not too long after I purchased my set, my friends TV started acting up, same old stuff everyone else complains of, weird geometry, focus problems, etc.. Finally after 3 repair attempts and 2 replacements Samsung took back the TV and gave him credit towards an LCD.
Now 11 months into my purchase, my set has totally died. I first noticed purple and green vertical stripes in dark areas of the picture about 2 months ago. Then the other night the picture distorted like it was wrapped around a balloon and after a few minutes the set just went dead, hasn't turned back on since.
So now my adventure in dealing with Samsung customer service and TV repair people begins. Can't wait to see how it ends....

1 out of 5 stars Geometry issues and rainbows   February 9, 2007
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Like other reviewers, I thought this TV was great when I purchased it in December 05. It was new to the market, slim, good image, and affordable for an HDTV.

Six months later, I started to notice some bowing of the screen and a rainbow appearing in high contrast areas (I lucked out with no strobing). I've had it looked at three times. First time, they thought it needed degaussing, which didn't do a thing. Tech modified some numbers in the factory menu, and that seemed to fix it. Then I began to notice bowing and the rainbow effect return a week later. Second time, the TV was taken for repair. Got it back, the rainbow seemed to have disappeared, but I didn't keep it around long enough to see if it would return. The screen was massively pincushioned and deformed. One end of the TV could make Fat Albert look like a skinny man, while the other end maintained the proportions. And the pincushioning... I wish that was all it was. But the edge of the screen wasn't just pincushioned, it was forming a wave.

This TV is terrible! Buy it if you have money to throw down the toilet. If you don't, stay clear. The people who gave it good reviews must have been the lucky few who got a non-defective set. Based on the number of complaints on the web, I wouldn't have purchased this set. Samsung should have recalled this set.

4 out of 5 stars Good HDTV for cramped spaces, but audio output shuts off   November 27, 2006
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

We got this HDTV as a replacement to fit in our cabinet: 32"x23.5". It fits perfectly, with not an inch to spare!

This is a good solid HDTV, that does all the things you'd expect: 16x9 widescreen display, ATSC (HDTV over-the-air) tuner, HDMI and VGA connectors. There's two component connections. There's three S-Video and/or composite connections, but only two are really usable: the third is buried off to the side and almost unusable (a very poor placement). In addition, it has two cable connectors, which is handy: I use one for our existing analog cable and another for getting free ATSC from an antenna.

The switching between input sources is rather complicated, as there are *three* buttons on the remote to do it all: one switches between component and HDMI only, the other switches between the two cable connectors, and the other switches between the various composite and S-Video hookups! That's amazingly complicated for what should have just been a single button, or maybe a second button to bring up a menu. In addition, the TV does not skip over unused input sources, and provides no way of manually disabling them during setup, so you end up having to wander around a lot before managing to find the input source you want.

Our middle-class AV setup, a mishmash of components acquired over the years as finances permitted, ran into a limitation of this TV, unfortunately.

The audio output jacks, on the back of the TV, only work when the TV is displaying a signal from the built-in TV tuner, or a composite video input source! S-Video connectors (our Playstation 2), and component video connectors (our DVD player), do not have any sound output at all! This is a real oversight. It is a hassle, because it means I have to have an extra audio switchbox and make the people in the house get up and hit buttons whenever they want to change video sources, so they have matching audio to our receiver. I can't just take the existing TV audio output jacks, unfortunately, because the TV cuts off their audio output.

What's maddening is that it does this on purpose: I hear the sound coming out of the small built-in TV speakers, but there's nothing coming out of the TV's audio output on the jacks going to my audio receiver! So, the TV is getting audio just fine, it's just choosing not to pass it along. This is a stupid design oversight that Samsung should have detected during engineering. It makes hookup a real pain, and a lot more complicated than it should have been.
