Amazon.com Product Description
Looking to expand beyond the limitations of a CRT TV without losing resolution or clarity? Check out the Sony KDF-60XBR950 60-inch LCD rear-projection TV, which features 3.28 million dots of resolution (1,092,168 for each of the three LCD panels) for a crisp, richly colored picture that looks terrific wherever you sit (if offers a 130-degree viewing angle). The TV includes an integrated ATSC tuner that receives high-definition content, along with a high-contrast, double-AR-coated screen designed for compatibility with the 16:9 enhanced aspect ratio. Unlike many projection TVs from the past, the screen and LCD panels ensure clear focus from the center to the corners, a flicker-free image, and no annoying phosphor burn-in.

The unit comes with Sony's proprietary WEGA engine, which is engineered to deliver a better picture, and employs Direct Digital II Circuitry (with an integrated 3D comb filter) for rich, natural-looking images from any source, along with the smoothing effect of Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction VI technology. Meanwhile, the TV's Multi-Image Driver (MID-X) and twin NTSC tuners let viewers watch two programs from different sources (480i, 480p, 1080i, or 720p) either side by side or in an inset window.

Other features unique to the KDF-60XBR950 include CineMotion reverse 3:2 pulldown, which automatically converts film content to the new TV source to deliver smoother-looking DVD images; enhanced Memory Stick playback, so users can view digital photos and MPEG movies and MP3 audio through the TV; and such convenient user features as a sleep timer, multilingual onscreen display, Speed Surf rapid channel scanning, auto channel programming, closed captioning, a two-event clock/timer, V-chip parental control, and favorite channel.

A movie's audio will sound particularly good through the KDF-60XBR950, which features a 30-watt speaker system (5 watts x 2, plus 20-watt subwoofer), along with your choice of Virtual Dolby (Pro Logic surround sound), TruSurround (adds a 3-D effect to stereo broadcasts), and simulated surround sound (delivers multichannel effect to mono programs). Viewers seeking the highest possible clarity from their movies can hook up their DVD players through the two component video inputs, while HD users can take advantage of the DVI-HDTV interface. The TV also includes one front and three rear S-video inputs, one front and three rear composite inputs, one front and five rear audio inputs, one front and two rear i.Link inputs, one optical output, one Control-S input and one output, one optical audio output, and one subwoofer output.

What's in the Box
TV, remote control, two AA batteries, user's manual.

3 out of 5 stars TV has been excellent for almost 5 years, but starting to fail....   October 2, 2008
Since I have been searching on this issue for about a week now I thought it would be useful to record my experience for those of you who might be looking to pick up one of these sets used.

For almost 5 years (this December) our 60XBR950 has performed admirably with good brightness, color, and decent contract/blacks given it is a rear projection LCD. Up to a couple of weeks ago I would have given it high recommendations, and in fact picked up a smaller version of the same set for my in laws just over a year ago.

However, as I have found out personally and via some internet searching this set and its cousins have some quality issues with regard to the optical block. I noticed a few weeks ago while watching a football game that the center of the screen was slightly grayer than the rest. This problem has progressed a bit to the point where I am seeing:

1. A definite fade in colors in the center of the screen. I believe it is the green LCD but haven't put a green-only image on the screen to check this out.

2. When my Vista Media Center menus are on the screen for an extended period of time I get some blue streaking through subsequent video. This tends to fade after a bit. Note that I never saw this before so it may be related to issue #1.

The good news in all of this (hopefully) is that I purchased a 5-year extended warranty on the set when I got it back in 2003. This was through Tweeter, which isn't in business in my area anymore, but is still around elsewhere. I am digging out the receipt this weekend and hopefully they will be able to take care of me. It is not clear whether Sony's extended coverage of the set applies to me, and I have also seen reports that they tend to replace your old optical block with a refurbished one that may or may not have other problems....

1 out of 5 stars Beware: Defective Optical Block   April 12, 2008
I purchased this tv in November 2005 and became aware of the known issue of the optical block failing after my purchase was completed. I crossed my fingers and waited for the green blob to show up but instead I was one of the lucky ones with black backgrounds showing up as dark blue. Now I'm afraid if I have them install an optical block (the warranty was extended due to a class action lawsuit) I'll just have the same problem a year or two from now. This was a very bad $4,200 investment and I would encourage everyone to do a search for SXRD and Optical Block on the internet to see what I mean. Sony discontinued manufacture of these tvs in 2007.

5 out of 5 stars I love this TV   January 29, 2008
We bought this TV over 2.5 years ago and it is still as great as it was on its first day. I just bought a Playstation 3 to play Blue Ray movies and I could not believe the quality of the picture on my screen. Lately I've been looking at the screens in Best Buy and Circuit City thinking that my TV is becoming old and the picture isn't as clear as the new 1080p LCDs. Boy I was wrong. Attach a Blue Ray player to this TV and it still is better than 95% of the new 1080p LCDs or Plasmas. As much time as I spent in front of this TV since I bought it, it has been as great investment...

2 out of 5 stars Expensive repair   December 9, 2007
We purchased our TV 3 1/2 years ago. Now needs an optical block for 1500.00. Thought we were buying quality with this expensive of a TV. Repair guy said this should not have happened and Sony says, out of warrenty. Trying to decide whether to fix or just get a new TV with a new warrenty. Good luck to the rest of you.
