In film mode, DCDi handles 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown as well as correcting bad edits. With video-based material, the FLI2310 removes coloration artifacts produced by conventional video decoders. DivX is a video codec (a piece of software encoding and decoding video) based on the MPEG-4 compression format, that blends good quality video with a low bitrate. This translates to a smaller file size (around 15 percent of a standard DVD's video file), making it easier to transfer to portable devices as well as quicker to create (encode). HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) is a disc encoding format for audio CDs and DVDs. It can encode 20 bits of audio information into a conventional CD 16-bit channel, yielding a greater dynamic range and a more true-to-life sound when decoded. HDCD-equipped players will improve audio quality for even traditionally recorded CDs and DVDs. Conversely, because of the recording process, HDCD-encoded media will also sound better than traditionally CDs and DVDs on players that don't have the HDCD chip. DVI (Digital Video Interface) provides an uncompressed transfer of high definition video from a digital video source to a digital display device. HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) ensures copy protection of the content. I bought an OPDV 971 H, because I wanted to watch DVD from Region one casting Jeremy Brett (The BBC's Sherlock Holmes, 1933-1995). I could not find the convenient apparatus in french stores. I'm very satisfied with Oppo DVD player; it reads any DVD without tuning. You put the DVD in the disk-tray, press "play", and that's all: it works!

It appeared to be a good player however it started malfunctioning after 1 year and by the end of the second year no longer worked.

I love it's performance EXCEPT that it doesn't output HDTV resolutions through the component video interface. My TV only has component inputs so this is a big problem for me. Beware, though this may have to do with copy protection compliance or something. Other manufacturers may have the same problem... We're kind of in the dark ages in video world where copy protection trumps functionality every time.
all i needed was a better remote... September 24, 2007
i put this unit on my panasonic plasma. it has fantastic features and plays every disk and file type i have tried. updating the firmware was easy and i recommend doing it first thing. i would take a better back lighted remote over the included cables. problem soved with logitech harmony remote. i love that oppo is out there to extend the life of my sd-dvd collection. when i get a 1080p set, a new oppo will soon follow. i highly recommend this product.
Top rated Upconverting DVD player Meets Expectations June 17, 2007
I replaced a regular DVD player with this Oppo unit after I read an independent lab report that ranked it best when compared to 30 other models. The unit works perfectly, has a sleek industrial design and comes with all necessary cables. I noticed a definite improvement in picture quality with DVDs played on my Sony Bravia 46" HDTV compared to my earlier unit.
