quality HDTV at great price February 16, 2007 I picked this up at sams club for $399 for use in our bedroom. Not sure if these other posters got bad sets but mine works great. I don't have any bowing and the speakers are plenty loud unless you are throwing a rave.
The only complaint I have is that if you are watching an HD channel you can't use the zoom function to fill the screen, so you often have side bars that really make your 27" tv look like a 20". When the signal is not HD you can use a zoom key to zoom up to 2 times.
Overall this is a great buy that I would suggest to anyone that is looking for a quality HDTV but is not concerned about large screen size.
Don't Bother December 19, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This TV has a ton of features that are amazing for the price. Do not purchase this television. Do NOT.
Why, you ask? It has major defects. The picture quality, features, inputs and outputs, and aesthetics are AMAZING for the price. But you just can't get around defects.
I purchased this television about 4 months ago. The well-documented geometric "bowing" that seems to take place at the edges of the screen are very apparent. I simply cannot believe Samsung can release a TV with a defect as major as this. The edges of the screen, especially when watching digital broadcasts, look like you are watching them through goggles or something. Terrible. If there is a stock ticker or menu or graphic along the edges of the screen, they are wavy, and bend outwards towards the edge of the screen. Why have an HDTV if the screen is defective?
Secondly, another well-documented defect started to occur about a month ago. Purple and yellow blotches or blobs of color are forming on the left and right sides of the screen. If you watch Family Guy, Peter's face is green instead of peach. Nice. I thought only the bowing was the main problem, but after some internet-research, I found tons of others with this problem as well. If you don't believe me, search on Google, you will find a forum with 56 pages of complaints on this one model of television. Degaussing the television does NOT help.
Thirdly, when you are watching digital broadcasted HDTV, the commercials make your set snap and pop in between commercials. If that's not annoying, I don't know what is. I've found others with this problem as well!!
All three of these major problems, and the refusal of Samsung to issue a recall or replacement, is making me give this TV 2 stars.
The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars (instead of 1) is because if it weren't for these defects, which is happening on over half of the TV sets purchased, this would be one of the best values the television market has ever seen. HDMI, component, optical out, slim fit design, it's perfect - until the defects start to take effect. DO NOT BUY THIS TELEVISION.
And to a lot of reviewers out there that say the geometric "bowing" at the edges of the screen isn't a big deal, come on over to my house and see how horrible it is on MY screen. Not a good purchase.
Great deal, great performance, easy to use May 13, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this unit as an open box bargain at Circuit City for $349. An incredible deal for this price, I use it has an HDTV in the bedroom and for XBOX use. With HDMI input and two component inputs, its a higly usable TV, with minimal distortion. I have not had the bad ticker scroll that some describe.
Speakers are great for the bedroom-- meaning there isn't much bass there. The only drawback I've found so far.
No Quality March 6, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this TV to replace one of three that were cooked by a lightning strike. (I had whole house surge and individual protectors on all 3) I also have a 37" Panasonic plasma and a 30" Sony Wega HD. The Panasonic is awesome but the Sony is even better. I bought the Samsung at Sam's impulsively because they didn't have the brand I wanted. It looked OK on the display but that can be misleading. I was very disappointed with the Samsung. I had it plugged into Comcast cable and I recently had my cable rewired to update. At the best, some of the stations were acceptable. At the worst, they were grainy and irrating to watch. Color is not good. I tried every adjustment it had and couldn't get it good. I have the other two TVs on HD receivers. Since this one has it built in, I plugged it directly into the cable. HD programming was not great, analog was terrible. Results might be better with an antenna but I can't recommend this to anyone with cable. Now I have to lug this cow back to the store.
A lot of bang for your bucks February 4, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I purchased this TV to replace an ailing 22 year old Hitachi 19" portable. One of my purchase goals was to get the most features possible without spending more than $700 for the TV. After doing a bit of research this Samsung seemd to vit the bill quite nicely.
First major selling point is that this was the only HDTV in its price class with a built-in tuner to accept HD broadcasts over the air. There were a number of sets billing themselves as HD ready, but all required additional hardware to receive HD broadcasts. Like another reviewer pointed out, this set has a number of inputs for various video devices and includes an HDMI port for support of the latest devices. The set also comes with a remote that allows configuration from a very intuitive menu interface. It is possible to navigate the menu and configure the set without using the owner's manual, but I suggest looking the manual over as it rather nicely details how to configure special features.
At this point I wish to point out an issue some people have experienced with this set, but I myself have not experienced. Some have claimed that streaming text, like a ticker tape, at the bottom of the screen tends to bow at the center of the screen. If you search for reviews on this set, that complaint seems to appear commonly. I have not had the problem, but I point this out just so readers are aware it can happen.
Picture quality is crisp and clean for analog reception and digital high definition is just spectacular. I have been able to get clean digital broadcasts using an indoor antenna. The stereo sound provided by the TV is fine, but I suspect a lot of people will ultimately use home theater audio gear for sound.
Prior to this purchase, I had no prior experience with Samsung products. In the approximately 3 weeks I have owned this product, I have been very pleased with this television set. I recommend it to anybody who wants a HDTV without spending an arm and a leg, and wants something that is capable of receiving HD broadcasts over the air without expense of additional hardware.
