Product Description Sony has been the leading force behind new TV technologies, as evidenced by their groundbreaking Trinitron picture tube. Following in this tradition, the KV35S42 delivers performance features like a crystal-clear 35" display, digital comb filter, Velocity Modulation Scanning, S-Video input, and Matrix Surround Sound. Throw in convenience features like Easy Set Up Guide, Advanced On-Screen Menu, and Speed Surf Channel Selection, and you get an affordable, high performance television in the famous Sony mold.Universal Remote Control ergonomically designed for comfort and ease of use. It is preprogrammed with the IR codes for most brands of VCRs and Cable boxes. Digital Comb Filter provides finer detail, richer colors, less color blooming, and reduced "hanging dots", for a dramatically improved picture. Broadcast Stereo with dbx Noise Reduction/SAP improves the clarity and fidelity of stereo broadcasts by restoring dynamic range and suppressing unwanted noise. Simulated surround systems create a phantom center channel, expand the front left and right channels and place virtual surround speakers around you, simulating the effects of a multichannel system. Velocity Modulation Scanning automatically analyzes the picture for changes in the brightness that indicates the edges of on-screen objects. Sony's Velocity Modulation system then slows the scanning beam down to render these edges with greater precision. The result is increased definition, improved contrast and clear contours for a sharper picture. Only the Sony Trinitron picture tube has a cylindrical screen that's vertically flat from top to bottom! Sony's exclusive Aperture Grille takes the form of vertical slits that continue unbroken from the top of the screen to the bottom. With the Horizontal cross-bars eliminated, more electrons reach the screen. This results in a brighter, more dynamic picture.
Amazon.com Product Description The Sony KV-35S42 35-inch TV features the Trinitron picture tube, which is based on a cylindrical model that contains a flat screen face. Because the screen is flat from top to bottom, vertical lines remain straight, and distortion is minimized. The Trinitron tube also significantly reduces glare by reflecting light toward the floor, rather than directly into the viewer's eyes where it can make the picture appear washed out.The 181-channel tuner features MTS stereo reception with dbx noise reduction. Setup and programming is simplified with the trilingual (English, Spanish, and French) onscreen display. Three palette presets (vivid, standard, and movie) provide a range of audio playback, all available in Matrix Surround sound, which provides 3-D audio from the pair of front-firing speakers. The rear S-Video input lets you connect a digital satellite system, S-VHS machine or video game system for high-resolution entertainment. Two sets of rear audio-video jacks allow you to hook up a camcorder, VCR, or DVD easily. The Sony KV-35S42 also has two rear composite inputs and a single RF input. Convenient features include 12-channel caption, closed captioning, a programmable sleep timer, and V-chip technology, which lets parents monitor and block inappropriate programs. A universal remote control is included. Sony provides a two-year warranty on the CRT, one year on parts and 90 days on labor.

Obsolete, but a great TV August 31, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this model back in 2001. I haven't had a single problem with it and have yet to see an HD Plasma/LCD under $5,000 that I'd trade it for. It does NOT have component video inputs, which were fairly common on higher-end sets in 2001. I guess they might make DVDs look a little better, but the S-Video input still makes for an excellent picture. The sound is also excellent - multiple surround modes that actually work. I know that everyone's running out and buying HD, but this TV is good enough that I'm happy to wait a little longer.
Great value, Beautiful Picture ! January 15, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was in the market for a basic 36" TV with component video inputs. I almost bought the Toshiba 36A40/50 until I came across this Sony KV35S42 which was on sale at [a local store] around Thanksgiving 2001. Great value. The quality of the Sony Trinitron picture is outstanding. I use S-video for connecting my Pioneer DVD player to the TV, resulting in sharp and crisp picture while watching DVD movies. The built-in 5 Watt TV speakers produce surprisingly pleasant sound with impressive accuracy. Remote control is easy to use.Strengths: Great picture quality watching DVD movies. Even watching regular channel TV using basic outdoor roof-top antenna gives satisfactory result. At the price I paid, it was an outstanding value. Weaknesses: No component video inputs. I am just a little concerned about the recent reliability issue (from what I've read) regarding Sony TVs, although I haven't had any problem with mine owning this TV for over a year.
O.K. but you can do better March 3, 2002 First, the positives: Great color; user friendly set-up and menu options; Above average sound from built-in speakers; and simple to hook up to stereo system. Now the negative: Very heavy (183 pounds); cheap looking and cheap feeling remote, which is more complex and with smaller buttons than necessary; and the unit is very sensitive to a center-channel speaker. I took my first set back and exchanged it for another, only to find that my shielded center channel speaker, which worked fine with my 27" Magnavox television, cause a strange "shadowing" on my Sony set. This problem is only eradicated if I move my center speaker several feet away from the set. I got no help from Sony or my dealer, other than to offer yet another exchange. Needless to say, at 183 pounds, this unit is quite difficult to keep loading up and tranporting back and forth.
Worth It December 15, 2000 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
For the price this TV is great. Nice picture, sound, and size. My old 19" TV is like looking though a keyhole now. I did not know what I was missing out on. Quality is top notch. Hole family loves it. One bad note, I had to take back my first TV because it made a snapping sound and then the screen flashed in the top left corner. Although the TV seemed ok, it was to scary for me so it went back. Second one is doing great.
Fabulous TV! August 19, 2000 I've found that, over the years, spending that little extra for a Sony product is well worth it. I have rather heavy leanings toward Sony products, because I've found them never to be a let-down, this wonderful TV set included! Suddenly, my program and movie-watching have become almost theatrical experiences! The picture is surprisingly crisp and clean for a larger set. Oh, and do invest in a DVD player! After hooking everything up, the first thing I'd popped into my player was Disney's Tarzan. I nearly fainted from glee....the clarity....the colors....the full, resonant sound. I'm quite satisfied with my gorgeous TV!!
