Amazon.com Product Description Sharp's cutting-edge DV-HR300U is a full-function DVD recorder and DVD player, offering conveniences like an i.Link DV (IEEE 1394) input, DVD-RW/DVD-R editing and recording, and progressive-scan video performance for state-of-the-art home theater viewing. Equally as cool, the DV-HR300U's internal hard disk drive (HDD) can record and store up to 109 hours--4.5 solid days--of audio/video programming. That means you can record a full season's worth of TV shows and watch them anytime you wish, or archive your favorites to high-quality recordable DVDs at 2x speed. Other features include CD/MP3 playback, DVD+R/+RW playback, simultaneous recording/playback, and simple, convenient advanced programming options (including 1-year, 32-event scheduling) using VCR Plus+. Rewriteable DVD-RW media can be recorded on more than 1,000 times, delivering about six hours of programming in EP mode. The recorder's editing function will erase sections of recorded scenes easily, in addition to renaming the displayed titles. Select any image you like to represent a scene's thumbnail image for chapter selection. On rewritable discs, you can add chapter marks, divide existing chapters, and combine chapters when desired, too. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DV-HR300U stands ready to deliver the full potential of your commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DV-HR300U sports one set of progressive-scan component-video outputs and 2 each composite- and S-video outs for use with SD (standard-definition) TVs as well as with VCRs or DVRs. The i.Link-spec'ed DV terminal is perfect for transferring your digital home video footage directly to DVD. The DV-HR300U simplifies the process of searching for a specific moment on a disc through its High Speed Access thumbnail views and Quick Search functions. A video enhancement called Digital Gamma Picture will heighten the contrast of the transferred video to give it a more true and vivid image when displayed in bright environments. Other inputs consist of a generous 3 each composite- and S-video (with 3 total sets of stereo analog RCA inputs) and an RF coaxial video input for use with either an aerial antenna or a cable box. Two sets of left/right RCA analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A tamperproof feature lets you lock the recorder functions even with the power off, so children or others cannot change or use the timer-record functions. The unit's EZ Setup/auto clock feature detects all air and cable channels from the outset and also sets the clock by your local PBS station. What's in the Box DVD player/recorder, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

decent DVR for the price January 21, 2007 Pros: Bought this in June 2004 - still in use. Superb hardware: all the necessary input/output and more. Lots of features like editing, bookmarks, 'smart' recording to squeeze more disk space when necessary.
Cons: Had to send it back because it ignored channels > 90 - probably an old ROM. UI could have been more user friendly, both playing/recording/editing and remote controller. Infrequent DVR read/write errors causes machine to freeze.
Don't buy Sharp products June 4, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My machine won't turn on after 10 monthes use which is still under warranty. The customer service told me that I will only pay $45 labor fee to repair the machine but end up I got a $249 bill. I called back to the customer service and they put me on hold for half an hour. When I finally got another person to help me, she said she will find someone else to help me then she put me back to the main selection menu. What kind of customer service is that?
Quickly broke down and customer service a nightmare March 26, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Our DV-HR300U broke down within the first month of use as the event timer went out on us and the recording function basically stopped. Sharp's Customer Service suggested resetting the machine, and when that failed had us send it in. Well, that set off a six-month ordeal of first being told the machine would be repaired, then being promised a refund, only to have the machine show up at the front door. Unfortunately, the repaired machine now would not only not record, it wouldn't even play back commercial DVDs. So back to Sharp it went, and finally, after numerous unanswered messages, a veiled accusation that we'd never paid for the unit in the first place, eliciting a veiled hint that perhaps small claims court would be a solution, we received a refund. This was the last Sharp product I'll ever buy.
Worst experience ever! December 20, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
After using this unit for a month the hard drive just quit recording! I had it sent in 3 times to Sharp Repair , every single time came back in the same state it was beforet(unrepaired) but with a note from Sharp Tech Dept that nothing is wrong with the unit! Only after filing a complaint with Better Business Bureau they decided to refund me the money I paid for the unit because THE UNIT CANNOT BE REPAIRED! A Class Action Lawsuit should be filed against them because I think they knew that something is wrong with the design of this particular model but they still do not want to admit it!
Not a Bad Value...If It Works November 29, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I seldom purchase extended warranty options for items under $1,000, but I did on this one. Register it online and Sharp will prompt you with an extended warranty offer. Hm; wonder if they know something? If you buy the HR300U, part with the extra $40 for a year's extended warranty. You may need it.
I bought mine May 20, 2004. Happily recorded shows--mainly sporting events--to the hard drive, then dubbed them onto DVD. Worked great for about four months...and the original factory warranty is 90-days parts, 12 months labor. It still records to the HD like a champ, but after creating about 35 DVDs, that was all she wrote...literally. It won't dub a thing to DVD, presents a generic "an error has occurred" message that isn't documented, and the best Sharp customer service could suggest was to clean the laser lens. I don't even use this machine for DVD playback; I have an upsampling Samsung for that. So the unit has had very little actual DVD-in-drive time and, of course, cleaning the lens did nothing. Three different brands of blank DVDs and about a dozen in the trash now following failed recording, and my only option is to package the unit up and ship it off for "repair." Of course, I have about 20 hours of can't-be-replaced material on the hard drive that I can't move to DVD, and I'm not confident that will survive the shipping and repair.
Out of all the electronics purchases I've made the past three years, this is absolutely the one I regret.
